Our Journey Westward

Emilio and I are native Rhode Islanders. I have always wanted to move west, and Emilio is always looking for adventure, having lived in Guatemala, Massachusetts, England, and Rhode Island.

In 2018 I visited my best friend Joe in Salt Lake City, after he moved there. I was absolutely stunned by the beauty of the city and how easily accessible it was. It's nothing like Boston or Manhattan, where it's impossible and expensive to get around the city. The roads are open and easy to navigate. Plus, you're always within an hour of being secluded in the mountains. It really is the best of both worlds.

Since then, I have been two more times, making appearances at Arches NP, Zion NP, Bryce NP, Capitol Reef NP, Brighton Ski Resort, Solitude Ski Resort, and Snowbird Ski Resort. Each time has been better than the first (and going back to the east to ski was a real eye-opener).

Emilio and I had been back-burner planning a move out here for about a year, but hadn't really made any solid plans to do so. When the coronavirus pandemic hit the northeast in mid-March, we were out of jobs. We floated by for a few months, and then in the summer we realized that we would have to start looking for new jobs. We could do this in Rhode Island and stay where we were, or we could take this opportunity to move west and establish ourselves out there.

Well, we did it! On July 29, 2020, we hopped in Emilio's jam-packed 2011 Toyota Camry Hybrid and headed west, only having solidified plans for the first week (until Denver) and a month-long Air BnB reserved for when we arrived in SLC. This left for just about 12 days with no plans.
